Rano Optimistic OMC Can Mitigate Extreme Weather Disasters

Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno is optimistic that the Weather Modification Operation (OMC) conducted by the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) from Tuesday (3/20) to Thursday (3/20) can minimize the potential for disasters due to heavy rainfall.

"H opefully the OMC conducted by the local government through BPBD will be successful,"

This OMC was conducted to follow up the Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG)'s forecast on the potential for heavy rain in Jakarta from March 11 to 20.

"Alhamdulillah, it has been proven. We are not bragging, but hopefully the OMC conducted by the local government through BPBD will be successful," he expressed, Wednesday (3/12).

He revealed that BMKG's forecast about extreme weather in parts of Jakarta was feared to trigger flooding, as happened last week.

Therefore, his party through BPBD carried out OMC as part of an attempt to anticipate and minimize the potential for flooding triggered by extreme heavy rain.

He said that the efforts made by himself with Governor Pramono Anung in dealing with floods may not satisfy all sides. Including the way they monitored the floods using rubber boat and helicopter.

"We monitor to find the root of the problem. That way, any policy that will be decided has gone through a comprehensive analysis and refers to the interest of many people," he asserted.

Meanwhile, Jakarta BPBD's Logistic and Equipment Sub-group Head, Michael Sitanggang explained, this time the OMC was carried out to follow up BMKG's precautions related extreme rainfall in the second dasarian of February 2025. OMC activities use Halim Perdanakusuma Airport as a post.

As before, this OMC also involved BMKG, BNPB, and Indonesian Air Force. According to him, the OMC on the first day was quite successful so that there was no extreme rainfall throughout the day as predicted by BMKG.

"On the first day, we did three sorties of cloud seeding flights. The results were quite good, there was no extreme rainfall as predicted by BMKG," he said.
